Starting from the 19th century in China, a language called 'Nvshu' was created exclusively by and for women who did not have access to education at that time.

The exhibition progressively evolves through multiple portraits of women's rebellion music in different locations worldwide, to to the current day.

Hymns of Rebellion is an interactive exhibit where we hope to teach you about music created by women living in an oppressive society: music by women for women.

It is no secret that we live in a male dominated world, but women around the world are actively seeking to change this status quo. The aim of this event is to give recognition to women in the music industry who are actively producing empowering feminist anthems. It will showcase how music can be an instrument of rebellion, starting from 19th century China and taking the audience across the world all the way to the present day.

As a part of the exhibit will be a dance performance by the KCL's own Hallyu Society at 13:00 in front of Somerset House. At 14:00 our guest speaker, Gabriella Di Laccio, will give a presentation on her charity DONNE, and inform us on the role and history of women music composers.

A Spotify playlist full of Hymns of Rebellion has been composed and we would love to see you add music you believe is relevant to our topic onto it! Every language is welcome and all of the songs in the list will be played in the venue on the day of the exhibition! You can find the QR code to access this playlist on our Instagram account @hymns_of_rebellion which we invite you to go check out so that you don't miss any updates on our event. Furthermore, an interactive map will be available in the room so that you may explore the variety of female created content throughout different regions.

As we hope to support women in the daily struggle that they face within the music industry, we have set up a fundraiser with the charity we are working with. Vynils, posters and post cards will be for sale on site, with 100% of the revenue being donated to the DONNE organisation.

Come join us now on our Instagram page @hymns_of_rebellion and see you on the 16th of December!
