History and Inspiration

Inspired by the Japanese Tanabata Festival originated in Ancient China, we invite you to write a note about your relation to climate issues, place it into your decorated tin can and hang your piece on our Tree. Crafted with recycled materials at the talented hands of UAL student-artist Olivia Delacour, our co-creative Reminiscing Tree sculpture will be a culmination of communal climate experiences, standing as a portal to the future in contemplating sustainability as a way of life. Through our collaboration with the brilliant Ruairidh Johnston, the beautiful sounds of music made directly from the electrodes of live plants will serenade this multifaceted experience as we collectively reconnect with our surroundings.

‘Climatic knowledge for many people is not abstract or formal – as in statistical representation – but is personal and impressionistic. The climatic knowledge that many people hold is bound up with places, bodies and with social practices.’ (Hulme, 2017).

In evoking a strong sense of belonging as global citizens, Under the Reminiscing Tree pays tribute to the change-making drive of this generation, to encourage further environmental action combatting our climate-stricken world.
