Redefining Normal

Our event, Redefining Normal, focuses on sparking an open discussion about female body image and stereotypical standards that have been encouraged by social media. We hope to use these conversations to help normalize different body types and inspire self-acceptance and confidence for all.

Description of our event

Our event will feature an exhibition of abstract artworks in collaboration with UAL artists, with a focus on our theme of body positivity. The art pieces range from photography to clay models, all providing the artist’s unique perspectives on the body and what it means to them. We wanted to use artwork from fellow students to provide a perspective from those in a similar age group to us, aligning with the overall events theme of youth empowerment.

What to expect during the event

The second part of our event will feature two participatory workshops inviting audiences to join us to co-produce artworks against body shaming, one using a mannequin and the other using temporary ink, to explore the body positivity movement and how it can make a change. The mannequin workshop will feature thoughts and opinions from the general public, using a survey we have conducted on our Instagram page. We hope the attendees will be able to relate to some of these voices and help them engage more. Also, attendees are expected to take off the labels that used to humiliate their body shape or body size through inappropriate comments. The second workshop element aims to allow attendees to engage with different art forms on their own body using the tattoo templates we provide. We wanted to use this to combine a creative element to our theme of body positivity. â€‹
